Drone Flying: 15 Tips on Safe Drone Operation

Operating a drone safely and effectively requires knowledge, skill, and preparation. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned drone pilot, these 15 tips will help enhance your flying experience and ensure safe, smooth operations. At UA-Visions, we primarily use DJI drones, but these tips are applicable to most drone models.

1. Know Your Drone Inside and Out

Understanding your drone’s components and controls is fundamental. Get familiar with how the propellers attach, how the gimbal operates, and all physical aspects of your drone and its controller. The app you’ll use to control the drone is equally important. Learn what each button and icon represents—such as signal strength and obstacle avoidance alerts—so you can operate with confidence during every flight.

2. Use a Stationary Launch and Landing Pad

Always launch and land your drone in a clear area free of debris. To avoid getting dirt or dust in your motors or gimbal, consider investing in a portable drone launch pad. These foldable pads are easy to carry and provide a clean surface for takeoff and landing.

3. Practice Regularly

The best way to become proficient with your drone is through practice. Find an open, safe space like a park or empty parking lot and spend time learning how your drone responds to different control inputs. This practice builds confidence and improves your flying skills.

4. Ensure a Strong GPS Connection

Before takeoff, ensure your drone has a strong GPS signal. A reliable GPS connection allows your drone to set a home point and accurately return to that location if the controller disconnects. Without this connection, your drone could struggle to return home in an emergency.

5. Watch the Weather

Drones are not built for harsh weather conditions, especially rain or high winds. Always check the weather forecast before flying, and avoid risky conditions. If you must fly in the wind, start by flying against it so your return trip doesn’t drain your battery as quickly.

6. Follow the 20% Rule for Battery Life

Never fly your drone until the battery is fully drained. A good rule of thumb is to start your return flight when the battery reaches 20%. For longer distances, consider returning when the battery reaches 25-30% to ensure you have enough power for a safe landing.

7. Land on a Flat, Solid Surface

Avoid catching your drone with your hands unless absolutely necessary. Land your drone on a flat, stable surface to prevent accidents or damage to the drone. Attempting to catch your drone mid-air, especially in windy conditions, can lead to injuries or equipment damage.

8. Use a Screen Cover

Bright sunlight can make it difficult to see your controller’s screen, increasing the risk of crashes. A simple fix is to use a screen shade or find a shaded area to stand. This keeps your screen visible and prevents your phone from overheating and dimming.

9. Pre-Flight Gear Check

Before heading out for a flight, check your gear. Ensure all batteries are charged, memory cards are in place, and the controller is ready. Forgetting essential items, like an SD card, can ruin an otherwise productive flight day.

10. Set Your Return-to-Home Altitude

Always set your drone’s return-to-home altitude high enough to avoid obstacles like trees or mountains. In areas with varying elevations, like West Virginia, setting a low return altitude could cause your drone to crash into a hillside or other structure.

11. Perform a Quick Flight Test

Before starting your flight, hover a few feet off the ground to check that all systems are functioning properly. This ensures that your drone has a strong GPS connection and that the propellers and gimbal are operating as expected.

12. Follow Drone Rules and Regulations

Make sure you understand and comply with local, national, and international drone regulations. In the U.S., this includes maintaining a visual line of sight, flying under 400 feet, registering your drone with the FAA, and obtaining a Part 107 license for commercial use.

13. Get Your Part 107 License

If you want to use your drone for commercial purposes, you’ll need a Part 107 license. This certification allows you to legally sell drone photos, videos, and other aerial content. The test isn’t difficult, but studying beforehand is essential for success.

14. Master Active Track

Active Track is a valuable feature that allows your drone to automatically follow a subject. Before using it in a project, practice in an open area to fully understand how it works. Be mindful of your drone’s sensors, as some models don’t have obstacle avoidance on all sides.

15. Know Your Drone’s Limitations

Familiarize yourself with your drone’s obstacle avoidance capabilities and other limitations. Some drones, like the DJI Mavic Air 2, only have sensors on certain sides, making them more vulnerable to collisions in tight spaces. In sport mode, even drones with 360-degree sensors can be at risk of crashing into obstacles.

Final Thoughts on Safe Drone Operation

We hope these tips will help you fly more safely and effectively in the future. Remember, safe drone operation not only protects your equipment but also ensures the safety of people around you. Thanks for reading!
